Babushkas and Hard Hats Tour - Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area
July 21, 2007 |
It was a magical mix of ingredients that made Pittsburgh the Steel Making Capital of the World–a legendary industrialist, thousands of immigrants, and a wealth of natural resources. Begin your fun-filled tour at the Bessemer Converter—touch the invention that made Big Steel possible. Learn to speak Pittsburghese as the bus heads off to a picture-perfect stop atop Mount Washington. Follow the Monongahela River, once known as the "river of sweat," into the heart of the "steel valley." Along the way hear stories of the immigrant workers and their families and taste one of Pittsburgh sweetest traditions, the Cookie Table. Visit the Bost Building, a National Historic Landmark, for a guided tour of restored rooms used by Union leaders during the Lockout and Strike of 1892. While here, step into authentic steel worker clothing and protective gear. Next it's off to the Pump House and Water Tower, site of the dramatic Battle of Homestead and only brick structures remaining from the legendary U.S. Steel Homestead Works.
Babushkas and Hard Hats tours will operate on Saturdays–June 2 , July 21, and August 4. Tours depart at 9:00 AM from Station Square. Reservations are required. Reserve your seat by calling 412-464-4020 ext. 32 or purchase online today! $20 per person.
