Property History
This Italianate-style villa was built c. 1858 originally as a “two over two” with an abutting single-story, but between 2005 and 2009 the house was modernized and expanded with a second story addition. Annefield is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register for being a relatively rare form of high-style architecture in Charlotte County that is attributed to master builder Jacob W. Holt (1811-1880). Holt is best known for the Greek Revival and Italianate mansions he designed and built in nearby Warren County, North Carolina and Mecklenburg County, Virginia for the leading planters of the day.

The name of the property came down to us from the second owner of the property, Scottish merchant William Jameson (1745-1785), who named the plantation in honor of his wife, Anne Read. This lovely house of frame construction was built for a later owner of the property, Hillery M.L. Goode (1815-1900), a wealthy planter and merchant who represented Charlotte County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1878 to 1881.
 
Property Description
Flawlessly preserved to its 19th century design and character, Annefield is a truly unique, iconic home in Southern Virginia.

The house is sited on a high spot in the middle of the property, affording excellent quiet and privacy while providing views of the gently rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont. The three-bay front façade is distinguished by a full-length one-story portico. The twin entry doors and bold door surround feature unique sidelights, transom and pinwheel windows, which are a typical Holt detail. To the right is the formal parlor, and to the left a room formerly used as a bedroom but now used as a library. Behind the parlor is an enormous dining room, and behind the library is a den adjacent to the kitchen. A large center hall connects the front of the house with the kitchen. The back of the house is spanned by the kitchen, a pantry, wet bar with ice maker and a full bathroom, and opens onto a commodious terrace overlooking a boxwood-edged parterre. The kitchen cabinets were custom-made to match the style of the original built-in cabinets in the dining room. Throughout the house there are tall ceilings (11 ½ feet in the original house; 10 feet in the addition) and many original features, including windows with original glass, doors, heart-pine floors and fireplace mantels.

Upstairs there were originally two bedrooms, but when the house was modernized, the owners built an addition over the original single-story rear portion which added another bedroom, two large bathrooms, a laundry room, and a porch overlooking the garden. The house features geothermal HVAC and radiant heating in the kitchen and bathrooms, stainless steel appliances, a security system, and tankless water heaters supported by a 600-amp electrical service.

The three-acre curtilage includes four additional structures: the original unrestored kitchen house, a smokehouse, office (both restored) and a mid-20th century dairy barn. The interior of the barn has been demolished and is awaiting customization by a new owner. The large milk house adjacent to the barn is presently configured for temperature-controlled wine storage. An additional unrestored c.1830 residence located about 1,000 feet from the house provides an opportunity for restoration as a residence for staff or guests.

The farm is nearly 190 acres, of which approximately 87 acres are fertile pasture presently used for hay. The northernmost third of the land has been fenced for cattle. Of the remaining acreage, the house and grounds occupy 3 acres, there are 60 acres in hardwood forest, and 40 acres in planted pine. There are two ponds stocked with striped bass, and to the north Annefield has extensive frontage on Horsepen Creek , a broad year-round stream. Open fields and mature hardwood forests combine to form a bucolic landscape that has changed little in the last 150 years.
