Property History
Orange County, once the largest county in Virginia, originally ran as far west as the Mississippi River and north to the Great Lakes! It is known for the scenic beauty of its rural countryside, its many horse farms, mountain vistas, Civil War battlefields, wineries and breweries, and Montpelier, Presidential home of James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution”. During the winter of 1863-64, Mayhurst served as the headquarters for Confederate General A. P. Hill and he and his 18,000 troops spent the winter on the property.

Property Description
This restored Italianate Victorian Plantation Manor House, privately situated on 36.52 acres, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as a Virginia Historic Landmark. A beautiful oval, spiral staircase, rising from the English Basement to the Third Level, highlights the interior of the mansion.

On entering the Main Level of the Manor House, you are immediately struck by the spacious foyer, 10½-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, the archways and arched windows, fireplace, original woodwork, and the spiral staircase! On the right of the foyer is the Library with fireplace, built-in bookcases, and floor-to-ceiling arched windows with original interior wooden shutters. There is a guestroom (General’s Bedroom) on this level with private bath. Also, there is a Powder Room and the Owner’s Bedroom and Bath and an Office.

On the Second Level, there is a parlor with floor-to-ceiling windows and four guestrooms, each with private bath, two with whirlpool tubs, all with fireplaces and one with a private balcony.

The Third Level has a guest suite with sitting area, another parlor and three large storage rooms – possible space for future expansion. From this level there is a staircase leading to the rooftop cupola with 360-degree views. It is here that General Stonewall Jackson is said to have viewed his troops!

The spiral staircase leads down from the Main Level to the English Basement. Here you have the spacious Dining Room, that can seat 30 for events, with fireplace and large windows looking out on the patio and the lawn. The restaurant-style Kitchen, the Laundry, and the Utility Room with a commercial water treatment system are accessed from the Dining Room. On this Level is a handicapped accessible guestroom and bath with a private outside entrance,.

In addition to the Manor House, there is a fully restored 1837 School House serving as a guest room, complete with full bath and kitchen. The Magnolia Cottage, currently a rental unit, has a bedroom, living room, office and kitchen. The Summer Kitchen is the original 1820 home of the owner. After the Manor House was built in 1859, it was used as a summer kitchen and servants’ quarters. It is currently used for storage. There is a large Barn with stalls and a tack room that could be converted to a rustic venue for events.

The park-like grounds are beautifully landscaped with plenty of space to accommodate large, outdoor functions. Additionally there is a spacious brick patio that is perfect for receptions and smaller functions. There are walking trails and a large pond is stocked with fish!

Additional Notes
Mayhurst enjoys a stellar reputation and has operated as an inn for more than 20 years. Its proximity to the University of Virginia, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia as well as Richmond and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia is ideal for business.
