Property History
During an Indian raid on the town of Andover (now North Andover) on the fifth of March 1698, the Johnson house was attacked and burned. It was written that "the most severe and distressing shock, which Andover ever suffered from the Indians was on the fifth of March 1698" (Timothy was 14 years old)... "when between thirty and forty Indians surprised the town, killed five persons, burnt two houses and barns with the cattle in them and set fire to the meeting house" (an excerpt from Dr. Symmes Thanksgiving Sermon). Daughter Penelope, 19 years of age, was believed among those killed. There is a strong tradition that she was not killed but stolen from the earlier house behind the present one and taken down the Merrimack River by the Indians, never to be seen again.

Timothy built a new house in 1708, the date the Supreme Court has ruled for the present house.

Property Description
The Timothy Johnson House (Circa 1708)

Stunning 4400 sf +/-, 6 bedroom, 4.5 bath, antique colonial in the heart of North Andover. This majestic home is rich with historical significance including but not limited to “First Period” and “Georgian Style” architectural details which have been meticulously restored and thoughtfully blended with all of the luxurious modern amenities of an estate like home. Whether it's the radiant heated bathroom floors, the authentic Indian shutters, the modern luxurious kitchen, the 6 working fireplaces, the two-level detached 6 car garage, the gun stock beams or the two different master suite configurations including one with his and her separate bathrooms, this home will leave you absolutely speechless. The property also features a 1.35 acre lot that epitomizes sumptuous outdoor living featuring the covered brick patio with pergola, the stand alone gazebo and the private park like garden and grounds. Make this magnificent piece of history your own.

Additional Notes
Note from the current owners:
"When we bought the house in June of 1998, the owners told us that they felt that they weren't merely selling a house, but turning it over to the new caretakers of it and its history. We feel privileged to have lived in a piece of history for the past 19 years and to be able to contribute to its preservation and enhancement, keeping the house "alive" for future generations to learn from and enjoy as much as we have."
