Property History
The Superintendent’s House (also known as the Vickery House) at Mt. Wachusett State Reservation is one of the first substantial buildings built by the fledgling state park system in 1903. The two-story, four-bedroom Dutch Colonial Shingle style house was built as the residence and offices of the first Superintendent for the Reservation, Guy Chase.

Property Description
The building retains a number of original features, including built in cabinets and benches, field stone fireplace and pocket doors. The house is located in a quiet section of the Reservation in the shadow of Mt. Wachusett, facing east towards Boston. It is set back from Mountain Road, separated by a dry stone wall and a row of planted trees. Recent improvements to the building have addressed structural issues throughout the house, asbestos removal, and exterior scraping and priming. However, the building still needs substantial rehabilitation, including work on interior finishes, windows, and all systems, including electric, plumbing and heating.

Additional Notes
The deadline for proposals is Friday, January 5, 2018 by 3 pm. An open house to assess the interior of the buildings is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 18 from 10am-1pm. Parties interested in attending the open house must RSVP at HCP.Requests@state.ma.us.

Curators are selected through an open and competitive process and proposed reuses must be compatible with the historic and natural character of the park. Proposals are evaluated according to the experience of the applicant, the quality of the reuse plan, proof of sufficient resources to undertake the project, as well as the level of public benefit beyond providing biannual public access. Properties must be rehabilitated according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Rehabilitation. Electronic copies of the Request for Proposals, as well as more details on DCR’s Historic Curatorship Program are located on the DCR website at tinyurl.com/ma-curators. For hard copies of these documents, or any other questions, send an e-mail to HCP.Requests@state.ma.us, or call 617-626-1361.
