POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation

A joint program offered by Clemson University and The College of Charleston
The College of Charleston and Clemson University seek a qualified person to direct their joint Master of Science Program in Historic Preservation in Charleston, South Carolina. The Director will oversee the administration and policies; will coordinate all activities, including budgeting, fund raising, and grant writing; will chair the Joint Steering Committee and work with them on curricular development and assessment; and will serve as the official spokesperson for the joint program. The candidate should qualify for appointment as a tenured, full professor at both institutions. Expectations for teaching, research, and service are negotiable and will reflect the
strengths of the applicant and the needs of the program. The position line and salary expenses will be covered by the tuition generated by the program. The Director will be housed in Charleston.  The Director should have a terminal degree in historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or other relevant fields, with significant experience in historic preservation. Those candidates with previous administrative experience, a record of external fund raising, and strong connections to related organizations and disciplinary groups (such as historic preservation agencies, foundations, and societies) are preferred. Candidates must demonstrate a solid record of scholarship, teaching, and professional practice. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Review of materials will begin immediately and will continue until the October 30 deadline. Position will remain open until filled.
Clemson University and the College of Charleston together administer the program that was established in the fall of 2004 and is projected to grow from the current 24 students to 30 students. The director will oversee the smooth running of a program that addresses issues of national and international concern while using the city of Charleston and the Low Country region of South Carolina as a teaching and research laboratory. The city of Charleston strongly supports historic preservation and cultivates a strong preservationist community. Numerous collaborative opportunities are possible with the Historic Charleston Foundation, the Preservation Society of Charleston, the National Park Service, the National Trust, the SC SHPO office, US ICOMOS and the American College of the Building Arts. The director will also coordinate various international study options such as Clemson’s off-campus programs in Genoa and Orvieto, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; Tunisia; and Istanbul, Turkey.

Located in the heart of historic Charleston, the program serves a diverse student body attracting from national and international communities.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with credentials and experience. Candidates should forward a letter of interest, cv/resume, and a list of three references to: Historic Preservation Director Search Committee, c/o Rae Ann Blyth, Clemson University/College of Charleston, 292 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

Questions should be sent to Ashley Robbins, AIA, ASID or Robert Russell, co-chairs of the search committee at arobbin@clemson.edu or russellr@cofc.edu.
