ROLE:  Architect/Engineer I

WORKING TITLE: Historical Architect

SALARY:  $ 40,959 - $ 55,500 depending on experience (Career potential to $84,062)    

Responsibilities:  As a member of the historic preservation easement staff, the position is responsible for providing technical assistance to easement property owners. Reviews proposed changes to easement properties according to terms of easement and Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (Standards); provides technical assistance and guidance on appropriate treatment to property owners within specified timeframe; coordinates review of requests for approval, changes to easement properties, etc. with Easement Program Manager.  When applicable, assists property owners in developing changes or alterations that will be consistent with the Standards and terms of the easement.  Works closely with Easement Technical Advisor on appropriate follow-up after inspection of properties, to ensure good stewardship. Makes site inspections to interpret specific landscape and restoration/rehabilitation problems and to identify solutions. Promotes appropriate rehabilitation and restoration measures by providing technical assistance and guidance on preservation technology and procedures. Assists with the promotion of the easement program through public workshops, presentations, publications, and site visits.  Provides assistance with initiatives by the Office of Preservation Incentives.  Provides technical assistance and architectural expertise to agency staff members and programs, owners of historic properties, other members of the general public, state agencies, local governments, and private presentation groups on matters of historic architecture and design. Position requires site visits throughout Virginia, photographic documentation, architectural drafting, research as appropriate, written correspondence, meetings, and telephone consultation.  

Qualifications: Superior oral and written communications skills; knowledge of historic architecture of Virginia and/or Mid-Atlantic region; considerable knowledge of technical, legal, and historic resources management practices and procedures as they apply to architectural history and historic buildings, structures, districts and landscapes; knowledge of and experience in applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and more specifically, the  Standards for Rehabilitation; experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary team; ability to instruct/guide others positively. Applicants must meet the Secretary Of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architecture.  A thorough understanding of historic preservation laws, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines, and ability to negotiate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Ability to apply technical, legal and cultural knowledge and planning principles to complex architectural rehabilitation projects.  Ability to proficiently operate Microsoft Office computer software. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in architecture or architectural history preferred.  Graduate degree in architecture, architectural history, or historic preservation highly desirable. LEED certification highly desirable.
