The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the nation's leading advocacy organization dedicated to saving historic places to support sustainable and revitalized communities, has a summer internship opportunity for a business student with strong business assessment and strategic planning skills to assist our Heritage Travel, Inc. (HTI) for-profit subsidiary in assessing the opportunity for premium (e.g., Gold or Platinum) membership by users of the HTI online site.
Duties:
The intern will work with Heritage Travel, Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of the National Trust launched in 2009 which is building an exciting and interactive web portal for heritage travel. Recent research by the U.S. Department of Commerce of cultural/heritage travel shows a strong market:
- 78% of U.S. leisure travelers (118 million adults) participate in cultural and/or heritage activities when traveling, contributing $192 billion annually to the U.S. economy
- Fully 40% of all leisure travelers in the U.S. alone can be classified as those who actively engage in cultural and heritage travel. They contribute nearly $124 billion to the U.S. economy
- 65% of those travelers seek travel experiences where the “destination, its buildings and surroundings have retained their historic character.”
Surveys of potential premium members and a study by the nation's leading travel industry consultants have been undertaken on behalf of HTI. However, the material needs to be scrutinized and vetted, and assessment of the real business potential undertaken in light of the business goals of HTI, the potential ROI, staffing needs, and impact on the parent's membership program. The intern will be asked to review this material in depth, undertake additional research as appropriate, and build a business case out of the information provided by the data. The intern will report to the President and CEO of Heritage Travel, Inc., and will work closely with the Vice President of Business & Finance and the Vice President of Membership at the National Trust. The HTI Board, led by Jeffrey Schutz, the Chairman of Centennial Ventures of Denver, Colorado, will also review and comment on the intern's work.
Qualifications: Candidate must be an MBA student, and should be a self-starting, social entrepreneur with a detailed knowledge of business practices. Strategic planning experience is preferred. Ideal candidates will be those with a track record of utilizing their creativity and business acumen in support of mission-driven efforts or institutions.
