Philadelphia’s favorite outdoor space spruces up (Rittenhouse Square Centennial Restoration); a neighborhood gem shines once more in Mt. Airy (Nugent Senior Apartments), a best seller is “re-released” in all its glory in Bucks County (Pearl S. Buck House) and a historic turnaround occurs in Strawberry Mansion (33rd and Dauphin Loop Improvements).

These dramatic projects are among the diverse winners of the 2014 Preservation Achievement Awards, recognized annually by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.

The Alliance will present its Grand Jury Awards to an impressive 15 regional restoration and revitalization projects at the 21st annual Preservation Achievement Awards event on June 4, 5-8pm, at the historic Union League of Philadelphia. (Complete award winner list below, and at PreservationAlliance.com/awards.)

“Each year we are delighted to recognize the amazing success stories of once threatened or neglected buildings brought back to life through preservation and adaptive use and the inspiring dedication of individuals and organizations to the Philadelphia area’s historic resources, and 2014 is no exception,” said Preservation Alliance executive director Caroline Boyce. “This year we celebrate the stewardship of well-loved public spaces through community action, the meticulous conservation of museum houses, the beauty of architectural gems polished, the new life of a former brown field site through green renovation, and neighborhood stabilization anchored by the restoration of once vacant buildings. These wonderful successes demonstrate the positive effects of historic preservation throughout the region.”

The Alliance also presents Special Recognition Awards at the Awards luncheon to individuals and organizations whose extraordinary accomplishments in preservation contribute to the region’s unique character and sense of place. The most significant of these awards is the James Biddle Award, recognizing lifetime achievement in historic preservation. The 2014 James Biddle Award will be presented to Janet S. Klein, an avid preservationist who has been a longtime advisor and supporter of the Preservation Alliance, and has served on the Philadelphia Historical Commission, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and on boards of organizations including Preservation Pennsylvania, Friends of the American Philosophical Society, the Abraham Lincoln Foundation of the Philadelphia Union League, and the Rosenbach Museum and Library.
