CHICAGO (October 6, 2014) –It’s time to celebrate Chicago’s historic bungalows and their owners’ dedication to renovating and restoring them through the 10th Annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow Awards. Created by the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association with the support of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the awards honor the creativity and efforts of bungalow owners for interior and exterior renovations, restoration, green design, landscape design and, new this year, window restoration. Window Restoration projects should preserve the historic detail and materials of original bungalow windows and demonstrate appropriate methods for repair/restoration.

The Window Restoration category is an addition to the following award categories:
  • Interior Restoration that accurately recovers the details and forms of the Chicago bungalow
  • Interior Rehabilitation that demonstrates a contemporary use of space while maintaining the integrity and distinctive features of the structure
  • Exterior Rehabilitation that is consistent with the lines and look of the particular bungalow and those around it
  • Green Project that demonstrates the use of energy-efficient design and renovation while maintaining classic features
  • Small Project that preserves historic detail and form while improving one aspect of a room or the exterior at a cost of $5,000 or less
  • Landscape Design that demonstrates a creative design solution and enhances the bungalow’s architecture and overall visual impression of landscaped space.
"For many Chicagoans,” said Richard Driehaus, “a bungalow is the first house and the only house they have ever owned. For those of us who were raised in one, the bungalow will always occupy a special place in our hearts.”

The first place winner in each category will be awarded $1,000 and a handcrafted bronze HCBA plaque.

Nominations can be made by bungalow owners themselves, a neighbor, friend, or neighborhood association. Nominated projects can be whole homes, single rooms, or small projects and will be judged by a panel of architects, preservation experts and civic leaders. Any project completed within the last five years is eligible. All nominations are due by Wednesday, November 5, 2014, and on-site viewing of the finalists’ bungalows will be conducted on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15.

The Awards nomination form can be completed and submitted online at www.chicagobungalow.org, or mailed to HCBA at 53 W. Jackson Blvd, Suite 1125, Chicago, IL 60604. Submissions must include three to five before and after photographs of the project.
