Technical Specialist, Ohio History Connection (Columbus, OH)
An employee in this position performs support duties requiring considerable judgment, excellent organizational skills and sensitivity to complex situations and tight deadlines. This position is responsible for a variety of support, technical review, and data management tasks for departments of the Historic Preservation Office, which serves as state historic preservation office for Ohio. Acts as a resource person for the Historic Preservation Office staff, consultants, agency representatives and the general public by handling various aspects of project submissions, tracking, close-out and filing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for initial technical review of incoming submissions under a variety of program areas, identify missing and insufficient information, correspond with submitters to resolve issues.

• Carry out basic research to assist staff with producing public education materials and web pages.

• Respond to status check inquiries, procedural questions, and requests for assistance made by phone, email and written correspondence.

• Responsible for maintenance, including filing, re-filing, and general upkeep various hard-copy program files.

• Assist researchers and others using public files by providing verbal and written guidance.

• Assist with cataloging, organization and maintenance of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office library and image collections.

• Responsible for date entry and report preparation in a variety of program and tracking databases.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this posting are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in American history, historic preservation, anthropology, architecture, architectural history, historic preservation planning, or a closely related field, or the equivalent of education and work experience. Minimum of one to three years of experience. Familiarity with Federal Historic preservation laws and programs, (including the National Register of Historic Places, Ohio Historic Inventory, Ohio
Archaeological Inventory, Federal and State Project Reviews, Certified Local
Governments, and Federal and State Tax Credit programs), and with the Secretary
of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, is a plus.

Language Skills: Writing, editing, and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Mathematical Skills: Requires basic mathematical skills.

Technical Skills: Microsoft Office, including Access, or equivalent business software. Ability to use Windows and Windows-based PCs and peripherals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to work independently or with a group. Ability to pay close attention to detail while completing repetitive tasks.

Work Environment: Normal office environment.
