Internship, Poland Spring Museums (Poland Springs, ME)

The Poland Spring Museums are run and operated by the Poland Spring Preservation Society. The Poland Spring Preservation Society, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Nationally Registered Historic Landmarks: All Souls Chapel and the Maine State Building, along with managing the Historic Poland Spring Bottling Plant in Preservation Park. An intern will learn how the PSPS team manages these properties and is continuing to build traffic and awareness of our museum. We are offering 2 internships in for the 2017 season, one working on how to run a gift shop (small business and one working hands-on with our collections.

Business Internship

Summary: During this internship, the intern will be working with the Director of Operations as well as independently. On a variety of projects, the primary focus will be running the gift shop in our Maine State Building Museum. Working with an approved budget, the intern will be use their education in their business or marketing studies to improve and rework the shop into a successful venture. There will also be other projects creating press releases and social media outreach.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Gift Shop – As an intern, one will run the gift shop under the supervision of the Director. This will include buying/ organizing, marketing, product tracking inventory, and contacting consignees. The Gift Shop will also be the location for guests/visitors to check in and receive the audio tour equipment. There will also be basic retail requirements like running a cash register.

Working Conditions:

This position requires extensive computer work and interaction staff and visitors. This position includes repetitive tasks and requires the ability to work independently. Successful candidates must be detail oriented. Work atmosphere is at times quiet, but can be chaotic depending upon the current projects, such as exhibit openings or events. One also must learn Poland Spring History to help visitors.

Experience/Requirements:

Undergraduate or graduate student studying business, marketing or a related field.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively independently, as a team member, and with the public.

Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database programs.

Areas of Study/Interests:

Would prefer intern to have an expressed interest in learning more about a nonprofit or small business.

Compatible majors might also include history, anthropology and the humanities.


Collections Internship

Summary: During this internship, the intern will work with the Director of Operations and will learn skills related to database management and to document and track the Poland Spring Museums’ collections. There will also be an opportunity to help with exhibit design.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Inventory: Conduct an inventory of photos, objects and reference material.

Research: Research images and objects using the knowledge gained from learning the Poland Spring History from documents provided.

Cataloging: Assist with cataloging and numbering new artifacts.

Social media: Work with staff to create fun and informative posts about your work.

Working Conditions:

This position requires lifting artifacts up to approximately forty pounds and climbing to reach artifacts in storage.  Extensive computer work is required. This position
includes repetitive tasks and requires ability to work independently.

Successful candidates must be detail oriented. The collections department is a
fluid environment. Work atmosphere is at times quiet, but can be chaotic
depending upon the current projects, such as exhibit openings.

 
Experience/Requirements:

Undergraduate or graduate student studying history, museum studies, library science or a related field.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively independently, as a team member, and with the public.

Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database programs.
