Historic Preservation Program
College of Design, University of Oregon Portland
Beginning September 2018

The University of Oregon (UO) Historic Preservation Program (HP) is seeking a
faculty member for a one-year position to begin in September 2018.  This position will be based at UO’s Portland campus and will provide instruction and student mentoring in this nationally-recognized professional master’s degree program.

Position:

The Program seeks a faculty member who can teach architectural and cultural history as well as specialized courses in the field of historic preservation.  These courses might include instruction in cultural resource management (historic resource surveying, the National Register nomination process, or similar topics) or in building condition assessment and the conservation of historic construction materials.

The faculty member will teach two courses per quarter (total of six courses over
the academic year).

Qualifications:

Candidates would ideally hold a terminal graduate degree from an accredited institution in historic preservation, architecture/landscape architecture, history, planning or closely related fields.  University-level teaching experience is preferred.

The UO is committed to creating a more inclusive and diverse institution and seeks
candidates with demonstrated potential to contribute positively to its diverse
community.  The successful candidate will have the ability to work
effectively with faculty, staff, students, and local communities of diverse
backgrounds.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.  The faculty member will be eligible for university benefits.

University Context:

The University of Oregon is an AAU research university with roughly 25,000
students.  The UO Historic Preservation Program resides within the School of Architecture and Environment (SAE) as part of the College of Design.  SAE includes the Department of Architecture, the Department of Landscape Architecture, the Interior Architecture program, and the Historic Preservation program.  The preservation program is based at the University of Oregon Portland, a graduate school center located in the historic White Stag Building in the Old Town district of Portland.  UO Portland includes programs in architecture, journalism, law, and business.  The city of Portland offers preservation faculty and students a vast laboratory of physical and cultural landmarks, a strong network of professional practitioners, and significant resources for research, including the Oregon Historical Society archives and the Architectural Heritage Center’s collection of historic building components.
