DESCRIPTION:The Functional Planning and Policy Division of the Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking a Compliance Review Archeologist to join one of the nation's premier planning agencies. The Compliance Review Archeologist will serve under the Supervisor for Historic Preservation and will be primarily responsible for overseeing the protection and preservation of the County's historic cemeteries and burial grounds. This new position within the Historic Preservation Section is in the Functional Planning and Policy Division which works to support Countywide growth management studies and policies as well as to support area master, sector, and functional plans.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES:
Planner Coordinator:  $59,434 - $101,900 (Grade 26)
Determining the historic significance of cultural resources and archaeological sites with Montgomery County; Writing, presenting, and publishing reports that record site history, methodology, and artifact analysis results, which include recommendations for conserving and interpreting findings; Researching, surveying, or assessing sites of past societies and cultures in search of answers to specific research questions; Performing archeological monitoring for cemeteries and burial grounds in order to address and monitor impacts on cultural resources; Reviewing project plans and designs to ensure compliance with historic preservation regulations; Reviewing technical reports for sufficiency in meeting the County's subdivision regulations and Master Plan recommendations; Maintaining and updating as required the Montgomery County Cemetery Inventory, both in the field and in the County's GIS layers; Assisting the Historic Preservation Supervisor and Master Plan teams on recommendations for potentially designating cemeteries and archaeological sites as part of any master or sector plan process; and, Assess archeological sites for resource management, development, or conservation purposes and recommend methods for site protection

Senior Planner:  $52,480 - $89,803 (Grade 22)
Determining the historic significance of cultural resources and archaeological sites with Montgomery County; Record the exact locations and conditions of artifacts uncovered in diggings or surveys, using drawings and photographs as necessary; Compare findings from one site with archeological data from other sites to find similarities or differences; and, Assisting the Historic Preservation Supervisor and Master Plan teams on recommendations for potentially designating cemeteries and archaeological sites 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in planning, architecture, parks, engineering, environmental science, or equivalent disciplines related to job function and one year of progressively responsible professional level planning experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The successful applicant must demonstrate experience in undertaking archeological compliance review and participation in preservation planning projects. The successful candidate must also have knowledge of and experience in applying archeological methods and theory in prehistoric archeology of the Mid-Atlantic region, historical archeology of the Chesapeake region including African-American sites, knowledge of artifact processing, analysis and curation, knowledge of and experience in the analysis of known cemeteries, cemetery delineations, the location of unmarked burials, and the treatment of human remains.
 
Preferred Skills: GPS; CAD software, Microsoft Office Suite; ArcGIS.

The Montgomery County Planning Department is located in downtown Silver Spring. It is conveniently located near the Silver Spring subway (Metro) and train (MARC) stations. The Department is an element of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC), an award winning, bi-county organization, and offers excellent benefits and competitive salaries. Transit subsidies are available. Work is performed in a typical office environment.
