The Student Conservation Association seeks a Cultural Landscapes Intern for a one-year term of service at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (late summer 2018 -- late summer 2019).

The position will support the cultural resource program of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument with the production of a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) of the monuments Mission 66 Cultural Landscape. A CLI is a interdisciplinary document that draws form landscape architecture, historic architecture, historic preservation, and archaeology. This project will draw from research currently being conducted by a historical architect, who is producing a determination of eligibility for the monuments Mission 66 historic district. Work will be conducted with supervision and support from the ORPI cultural resource program manager, and will also interface with the NPS regional cultural landscape program lead.
 
This internship will focus on developing and applying a professional knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of architecture, landscape architecture, and archaeology. The intern will benefit from exposure to park planning processes, resource protection, and facilities operations will be inherent to the internship, as well as involvement with other NPS staff, NPS regional staff, various municipal, non-profit, and academic partners.

Intern will also have the opportunity to support the cultural resource program with ongoing projects in the areas of historic preservation, archaeology, and cultural resource law compliance.
 
Location Description
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a diverse, tropical desert on the international boundary and 60 miles from the Gulf of California. Summers are hot and winters are mild. See park web site at http://www.nps.gov/orpi/index.htm Park housing area is 6 miles north of Lukeville (nearest gas), 35 miles south of Ajo (nearest groceries), and 100 miles south of Phoenix (nearest big city).
 
Training Provided
Interns are encouraged to take advantage of NPS training opportunities held locally and regionally in the Southwest.
 
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
Recreational opportunities include use of the park gym, hiking, camping, and international travel. The beach on the Gulf of California is 60 miles away.

Housing is located in the ORPI employee housing area, it is shared with 3 bedrooms (2 full beds and 2 single beds), 1 ½ baths, kitchen, living room, and central air. You must bring your own sheets, towels and pillows. The kitchen has a stove, microwave oven, and two refrigerators. There are washers and driers for laundry. One person is assigned to each bedroom.
