Maryland Historical Trust - National Register Assistant (Crownsville, MD)

The Maryland Historical Trust is currently recruiting for a National Register Assistant to undertake a comprehensive re-evaluation and updating of National Register Historic District documentation throughout the state, and to evaluate locally designated, historic districts for eligibility for the Maryland Heritage Structure Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program.

This position is assigned to the Architectural Research Unit in the Office of Research, Survey and Registration and works directly with agency-wide analysis of historic and cultural properties with regard to their level of significance, condition, and preservation potential. The position directly supports the Agency mission of studying, evaluating, protecting, and interpreting the state’s historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions.

SALARY $53,627.00 - $69,518 with potential growth up to $85,951.00/year

Position Duties:
Review existing National Register Historic District nominations to determine whether their data meets current documentation standards.

Review local historic district designation information to determine whether it is adequate to support decisions regarding Tax Credit eligibility and augment or supplement that information as needed.

Update existing National Register Historic District nomination and local historic district designation information as necessary by visiting historic districts, recording (by written description and photography) their constituent properties, determining current condition and integrity, and mapping boundaries. 

Conduct documentary research to develop and/or enhance existing historical contexts and to determine and justify periods of significance.

Prepare revised National Register nominations and Determination of Eligibility forms based on fieldwork and documentary research.

Assist Administrator of Evaluation and Registration and National Register Assistant Administrator in processing National Register Historic District nominations. 

Fieldwork will require travel within the state (state vehicles available for use.)

Position is a hybrid of in-office, telework, and fieldwork.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies, Public History, or other closely related field.
Experience: Two years of professional experience and/or preservation internships in one of the above fields.
Notes:

1. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required general experience.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualifications.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications. 

A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies, Public History, or other closely related field.

Experience with historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods and a demonstrated ability to conduct architectural field surveys and historical research.

Experience with the criteria, documentation standards, and operations of the National Register of Historic Places, and demonstrated successful completion of National Register nomination(s).
