Executive Director, Lexington (MA) Historical Society (Lexington, MA)

The Lexington Historical Society, a vibrant, open, and welcoming nonprofit organization in Lexington, Massachusetts, manages and interprets to the public three historic house museums with significant connections to the Battle of Lexington, provides stewardship of important collections and archives spanning three centuries of Lexington history, and offers year-round programming to the community. There is a paid staff of seven year-round full-time and part-time employees, thirty seasonal employees, dozens of volunteers, and hands-on volunteer committees. The Society is actively undergoing the redesign of an education and exhibition space at the historic Depot building in which its headquarters are situated.

The Society seeks an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization, to provide effective operation, staff management, and strategic thinking for this thriving organization serving the local community and visitors from around the world.

The Executive Director is appointed by and reports to the Board of Directors of the Lexington Historical Society, working closely together to advance the Society’s mission, care for and promote its collections, enhance its financial sustainability, and elevate its impact in our community and beyond, including through creative marketing, robust exhibitions, and innovative programming.

In concert with the Board of Directors and relevant committees, the Executive Director:

– Is responsible for the organization’s management, including oversight of its collections and physical properties;

– Oversees operations including museum administration, financial management, planning, reporting, forecasting and management of all funds in a professional manner in concert with nonprofit guidelines and standards;

– Manages staff and fosters an engaged board, and acts as liaison between the Board and staff in order to pursue organizational goals;

–Leads fundraising planning and initiatives;

–Manages and oversees public programs and ensures quality delivery;

–Manages the Society’s Historic House Museums in terms of collections, interpretation, exhibitions, and physical care;

–Leads marketing and public relations initiatives;

–Assumes other related duties as delegated by the Board of Directors.


Qualifications:

– A demonstrated interest in and understanding of American history and enthusiasm for sharing it with the public;

– A team player with a proven ability to communicate and work well with staff, board members, volunteers, town officials, community organizations, and collaborative
partners;

– A commitment to Lexington Historical Society’s pledge to interpret Lexington’s diverse history in an inclusive way;

– A Bachelor’s degree in museum administration, history, archives management, or the equivalent is preferred;

–At least five years of management experience in an historical or similar non-profit organization;

– Demonstrated excellence in executing day-to-day details of non-profit administration, including accounting, finance, building and monitoring an annual operating budget, buildings management, and personnel management;

– A proven track record of successful fundraising and grant-writing is preferred;

– A strong knowledge of museum best practices;

– Proficiency in workplace technology including GSuite, Zoom, Constant Contact, Microsoft Office, and Excel;

–Excellent oral and written communication skills.


This is a full-time position. Yearly salary range is $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience. Medical benefits and generous vacation and sick time are provided.
