As a friend of the National Trust, I know you care deeply about saving the places where great moments from our history took place.
But I’m guessing you care just as deeply, if not more, about the places where important moments of our everyday lives have taken place. The place where your grandparents were married and the hotel where they spent their honeymoon. The train depot where community members shipped out for their tours in the armed services and the rows of bungalows that define a neighborhood’s character. The drive-in movie theater you frequented as a child or a community landmark that serves up local history to elementary school students.
Too often, these places can be lost in a heartbeat -- sometimes even before we realize they will be missed. That’s why we launched our This Place Matters campaign, to help people call attention to special places in their community before they are endangered. Because we all know the best way to save a place is to make sure it is valued in the community.
So celebrate a place you love, sound an alarm about a place that is threatened, or just start a conversation about a place that matters.
