Shaking Their Yankee Foundations: Evolving Modernist Ambitions- Historic New England cosponsors with the Cultural Landscape Foundation a day-long symposium on landscape architecture in the twentieth century, with special focus on innovation and experimentation in the period following World War II. Landscape architects Carol Johnson, of Carol R. Johnson Associates, Stud Dawson, founding principal at Sasaki Associates, and John Frey, of Mason and Frey, discuss their experience in introducing modernist landscape architecture to Boston. Gary Hilderbrand, principal with Reed Hilderbrand, presents the title address. In addition, panel discussions will focus on the Picturesque and Beaux Arts era, led by landscape historians Arleyn Levee, Dr. Elizabeth Hope Cushing, and Dr. Keith Morgan, and on the modernist era, led by architects David Fixler, Tim Love, and Joeb Moore. The symposium explores the significance of the legacy of twentieth-century design to the preservation community as well as to design in the twenty-first century.
