Context and Issues of Historic District Designation in an Urban Environment

Historic District Designation is a complex issue that poses many preservation and planning questions - How does one identity a potential Historic District? What is the purpose of designation and what are the pros and cons of creating a Historic District? Issues surrounding district designation in an urban environment may be more difficult to define and evaluate.
This day-long workshop will be an in-depth exploration of context and issues of historic district designations in an urban environment. Beginning with an introduction and overview of Historic Districts the workshop will explore period of significance determination, boundaries with multiple eras and areas of historic significance, infill, mixed-use and density issues. Successful designated urban Historic Districts will be evaluated and compared to candidates for Historic District designation. |
