2011 Conference on Illinois History
September 29-30, 2011 |
The conference will feature topics that include politics, architecture, community studies, Abraham Lincoln, African American history, and the Civil War. Teachers will benefit from workshops on a variety of topics. All teacher workshop sessions are approved for Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs).
This year's Thursday luncheon speaker is Terry Barnhart. Barnhart is a professor of history at Eastern Illinois University and author of Albert Taylor Bledsoe: Defender of the Old South and Architect of the Lost Cause (Louisiana State University Press, 2011). Bledsoe, a legal associate of Abraham Lincoln, gained fame as a metaphysician and speculative theologian. Relocating to the South, Bledsoe became a fervent defender of Southern culture, including the right to own slaves. Barnhart provides the first biography of this prominent intellectual figure.
The keynote Thursday evening banquet speaker is Bill Barnhart. Barnhart was a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Tribune for thirty years before retiring in 2008. A graduate of Knox College with master’s degrees in teaching and business from the University of Chicago, Barnhart collaboratored with Gene Schlickman on John Paul Stevens: An Independent Life (Northern Illinois University Press, 2010), the first biography of United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.
The Friday luncheon speaker is Gerald A. Danzer. Danzer is professor emeritus of history at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Author of numerous books and former director of the Chicago Neighborhood History Project, Danzer’s latest study, Illinois: A History in Pictures (University of Illinois Press, 2011), provides the most recent scholarship on Illinois through engaging prose and lush illustrations.
