Historic Barns of Clackamas County: Program and Barns Tour
August 27, 2011 |
Special note: this program begins at the Mark Prairie School, 7528 S Mark Road, south of Canby
The humble barn is part of Oregon’s rural landscape, serving multiple purposes on many an early farmstead. As the Portland area has urbanized, barns on once-rural properties have disappeared over time. An additional challenge is the difficulty of converting barn structures into new uses. There can be significant maintenance costs, especially when many farms no longer provide the primary income. But barns remain an essential ingredient of our building heritage. This program will tell us why, and then demonstrate that with a tour to visit some wonderful Clackamas County barns.
The program will begin at the historic Mark Prairie School (c. 1900), where the video “Historic Barns of Clackamas County” will be shown. We’ll learn about Oregon’s Century Farm program from Management Board Vice-Chair Richard Engeman, as well as Washington’s “Heritage Barns” program (something to aspire to) and the National Trust’s “Barn Again!” program. The newly-minted Oregon Heritage Barns initiative will be launched, and you can learn about it here!
From the school, we will all board large vans – generously provided by Clackamas County Tourism – for an in-depth tour of several historic barns, and viewing others along the way on this “barns-rich” route. We’ll provide morning refreshments and encourage you to bring a brown bag or picnic lunch to enjoy on a summer Saturday in a beautiful setting.
Pre-registration is REQUIRED, given transportation limitations – visit us online at www.VisitAHC.org or call 503-231-7264.
