Panel: Historic Preservation in Dallas
August 23, 2011 |
The Dallas Center for Architecture’s latest exhibition CONTEXT/CONTRAST examines the way new architecture does—or does not—attempt to be a part of an historic context. CONTEXT/CONTRAST asks how the charge of ensuring “appropriate” new architecture in historic districts has allowed neighborhoods to evolve without endangering the essential character that contributes to the public value and makes them worth protecting.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Center will host a panel discussion on historic preservation moderated by Veletta Lill, member of the Board of Advisers for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Panelists will include:
- Mark Doty, Historic Preservation Officer, City of Dallas
- Virginia McAlester, Author and preservation advocate
- Marcel Quimby, FAIA, Principal, Quimby McCoy Preservation Architecure, LLP
- Katherine Seale, Executive Director, Preservation Dallas
- And other architects and developers.
The panel will discuss the current state of historic preservation in Dallas. What challenges do owners and developers face in renovating historic architecture in this environment and economy? What recent revisions have been made to the City’s preservation laws? What recent successes…and setbacks…have been seen in historic preservation? What do the experts see as the future of historic preservation in our city?
The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a reception hosted by sponsor Corgan, Inc. The panel discussion will follow at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is a $10 donation benefiting DCFA exhibition programs.
