Introduction to Neon Sign Restoration
August 15-16, 2015 |
This two-day hands-on introduction to Neon Sign Restoration will include an overview of historic Neon Signs in Tucson, interactive demonstrations of neon tube bending, hand lettering, enamel refurbishment and a broad overview of the neon sign restoration process.
The hands-on workshop will complete the first phase of the mid-century modern neon sign restoration. The enamel 1962 Mr. Quick Hamburger Sign toped by a neon atom, originally located on south 6thAvenue, was repurposed and painted over decades ago. In 2014 the original drive-in restaurant building was modified and the owners, unable to develop an adaptive reuse strategy for the sign, donated it to the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation. This workshop will address real world issues sounding sign restoration, paint removal, enamel preservation and long term sign preservation strategies.
The workshop is limited to 14 participants. Early registration is required. A vegetarian lunch will be provided each day. Workshop cost: 150.00 | 100.00 for THPF members and college students.
