February 27, 2016 |
Details:
• Saturday, Feb. 27, 2:30 p.m.
• Harlow House, 726 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, Troutdale, Oregon
At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, Troutdale city parks and the Troutdale Historical Society will host a dedication of “River Bend,” a bronze trout sculpture by Jordan McGee, near the gazebo at the Harlow House.
Now a Florida art teacher, McGee was mentored by Troutdale sculptor Rip Caswell and will travel back to Oregon for the dedication.
McGee’s sculpture, created while working with Rip, is being given a home in Harlow House Park, site of Capt. John Harlow’s trout ponds. Captain John Harlow, who platted the Town of Troutdale, first came to the area to establish a country home and farm at the Harlow House location. He built fish ponds on the site, stocking them with trout, and named his farm “Troutdale.” When the railroad was built through the area in 1882, the name of Troutdale was given to the depot and to the new city that grew there.
A reception and refreshments will be held at the Harlow House after the dedication.
To learn more about Capt. John Harlow and his trout ponds, see displays in the Harlow House after the dedication.
The Troutdale Historical Society hosts its King of Roads exhibit on the Historic Columbia River Highway in its Barn Exhibit Hall, 732 E. Historic Columbia River Highway. Hours are 10 to 3 p.m., Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday when the adjacent Harlow House is also open. Admission free to residents of Multnomah County.
Troutdale Historical Society programs are free and open to the public.
