Preservation Related Topics for Architects and Planners
Free Continuing Education Opportunities presented by NKY Restoration.
NKY Restoration is committed to providing educational opportunities to help foster vibrancy in the Northern Kentucky River Cities that promotes economic development, place making, and preserving our historic assets. In addition to free educational sessions for property owners they also extend educational programming with professional development CEU credits for architects and planners at no charge with four sessions of continuing education on Friday, March 11, 2016. The programs will be held at Baker Hunt located at 620 Greenup Street in Covington, KY and include a light continental breakfast and free boxed lunch provided by Tri-State Wholesale Building Supplies. Historic Preservation and Conservation Easements
8:30 to 9:30 am - Eric Russo - Hillside Trust and Eric Everrett Landon - Frost Brown

This session will teach the process of creating and administering historic preservation and conservation easements along with reviewing their applications, benefits and restrictions. Attendees will discuss the responsibilities of donor and easement holder along with reviewing NKY easements.
The Stabilization of Historic Buildings
9:45-10:45 - Eugene Jacob and John Hillenbrand - SSRG
Eugene andJohn will help attendees identify the value of historic buildings, why they are worth saving and when they can be saved. The process of identifying and stabilizing historical carpentry and masonry will be reviewed.
Historic Preservation in Community and Economic Development
11 am to noon - Briana Grosicki - PlaceEconomics
Participants will learn the value of historic preservation as a revitalization tool for communities, especially disadvantaged urban neighborhoods experiencing issues such as disinvestment, vacancy and demolitions. There will be discussion on the
value of distinctive character, walkability, transit access, diversity and affordability as competitive advantages for historic communities as well as determining the right strategy for each neighborhood given its assets, location, demographics and other unique characteristics. Participants will be informed on advances in planning by learning how to use a smart phone application to collect and update data about historic buildings and neighborhoods quickly and efficiently.
Brownfield Basics
9:45-10:45am - Elishia Chamberlain - City of Ludlow, KY
Attendees will discuss what makes a brownfield, the importance of redevelopment of them especially in an urban and historic context, and review common issues and
obstacles faced during redevelopment.
NKY Restoration is hosting workshops and a vendor fair with a free lunch, "Taste and Talk", from noon to 1:30 that will be a mini taste of Northern Kentucky for a meal provided by local restaurants on Saturday, March 12 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Gateway Community & Technical College Covington Campus located at 525 Scott Street in Covington, KY. Although NKY Restoration is free, participants are asked to register online at www.nkyrestoration.com. There is free parking for the event
at the Midtown Parking Garage, located adjacent to the Gateway Urban Campus at
the corner of 5th Greenup Streets.
The NKY Restoration Weekend event has been partially funded with a generous
Certified Local Government grant given to the Cities of Bellevue and Covington
from the National Park Service and administered by the Kentucky Heritage
Council.

collaboration of individuals who represent businesses, artisans and craftsman,
non-profit organizations, cities and the local Historic Preservation offices in
Northern Kentucky and the Urban Cincinnati region whose main goal and purpose
is to provide educational opportunities in and to advocate for historic
preservation though organizing the NKY Restoration Weekend and related
programming.
