Organizing to Identify and Protect LGBTQ+ Heritage Places: Strategies and Lessons from New York City
February 1, 2022 |
Launched in 2015 and building on 25 years of previous research, the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project’s goal is to broaden people’s knowledge of LGBTQ+ history beyond Stonewall and “make invisible history visible.”
Now boasting over 375 sites in its online inventory and offering self-guided tours for phones, the Project has not only raised the profile of LGBTQ+ sites, but has begun to have an impact on other American cities and spurred efforts to identify and protect LGBTQ+ heritage at the civic and federal levels.
What can Canadian communities learn from the New York experience as they look to kick-start their own projects?
- Webinar Leader: Andrew Dolkart (Co-Founder and Co-Director, NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project & Professor, Historic Preservation, Columbia University, New York City, NY)
- Moderator: Chris Wiebe (National Trust for Canada)
