Maryland Association of Historic District Commissions 2008 Workshop
September 20, 2008 |
Historic District Commissions are asked over and over again to approve the use of substitute materials and/or allow replacements Commission responses to these requests need to proceed from a position of purpose and authority. They need to be consistent and in accord with established guidelines and criteria. Importantly they must be well articulated, so that applicants understand why decisions are being made.
This workshop will be divided into five subject areas: Roofing; Siding; Porch and Details; Windows; Brick, Masonry and Landscape Features lead by Daniel Sams, Betty Jameson-Carlson, Jeff Winstel, Susan West Montgomery and Shelley Rentsch. Each presenter will discuss the characteristics and conditions unique to these features, the steps commissions should take in making decisions regarding approval or denial of replacements and/or substitute materials, and provide some examples of acceptable and unacceptable replacements/substitute materials.
Members and staff of commissions and architectural and planning review boards are invited to attend along with planners, preservationists and anyone interested in learning more about the design and materials issues for historic resources.
Space is limited and fills quickly. Reservations are required, fee includes lunch. Please complete the reservation form below and return to MAHDC.
