The Historic Belle of Louisville's 100th Birthday Celebration

No other river steamboat in American history has ever reached the age of 100, so that honor goes solely to the Belle of Louisville, located at Louisville, KY. Through many years of preservation efforts, and with the care of dedicated crewmembers, this very historic vessel will celebrate her centennial in the company of other riverboats and visitors from all over the world. She began as the Idlewild, built at Pittsburgh, PA in 1914, was renamed the Avalon in 1948, and renamed again as the Belle of Louisville in 1962. Much of her equipment is original to the boat, and her engines are older than she is. Through another major preservation effort, her engines were rebuilt for the first time in 2014, replacing cast iron parts with steel ones, with the knowledge that she could possibly run another 100 years.
