2014 TAC International Film and Video Festival

May 9-13, 2014
2014 TAC International Film and Video Festival
The eleventh annual edition of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival premiers May 9th at The Shedd Institute, conveniently located in downtown Eugene at 868 High St.  TAC Festival is the longest running film festival in Eugene.  Every year we attract film-makers and archaeologists from around the globe to participate in this Hemisphere’s only juried competition.  This time around, film-makers from 24 countries submitted 113 films, from which we selected the top 18 films to be screened for this competition beginning Friday night, continuing through Sunday evening, May 11.  An awards ceremony gala will follow the film screenings Sunday evening, with film clips, acceptance speeches, and enveloped ballots announcing the winner - just like the academy awards!

Following the three days of film screenings, our TAC Conference on Cultural Heritage Film will take place on Monday and Tuesday (May 12 and 13) during the day at the University of Oregon Baker Downtown Center on 975 High St (just one block from the Shedd).  The Conference brings together film-makers and others from many US states and other countries to discuss the making and uses of cultural heritage film.  Last year the Conference featured speakers from Armenia, Macedonia, Malaysia, and Pakistan as well as a number of US states.  This year’s lineup is not finalized, but we anticipate presenters from Iran, Italy, and Malaysia as well as from a number of US states, including the Time Team America producers from Oregon Public Broadcasting.  These are just a few of the incredible educators, film-makers, archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, journalists, historic preservationists, environmentalists, geographers, and others who have interest new ideas and approaches to employ film for the common good of all humanity.

A video bar will be available for individual viewing of all the Festival films on the Monday and Tuesday of the Conference.  The USDA Forest Service plans at least one guided tour, to Cascadia Cave, and possibly more.  We are pleased to announce that Shelley Kurtz will be returning again as Master of Ceremonies.  After reigning for nearly thirty years as primary news anchor for KVAL-TV, Shelley Kurtz is thrilled to join us for another exciting season.  "I've been a fan of The Archaeology Channel film festival for a long time.  It's a great way to reach out to people who enjoy film and learn something about this planet they call home!  Rick [Pettigrew, Festival Director] brings together some of the most talked about issues of the day and, in contrast, some of the most remote issues you may have never heard about . . . but make a difference when you learn more about them."
