Free Admission for Military Members at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum
May 28 - August 28, 2014 |
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum participates this summer in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment of the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to all active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The free admission program is available at Macculloch Hall from May 28th through August 28th, during touring hours, to active-duty military and their family members (military ID holder and up to five family members). Active-duty military includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and active-duty National Guard and active-duty Reserve members. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The complete list of participating museums is available at www.arts.gov/national/bluestarmuseums.
“Blue Star is something that service members and their families look forward to every year, and we are thrilled with the continued growth of the program," says Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. "Through this distinctive collaboration, service members and their families can connect with our national treasures and enjoy an unparalleled opportunity to visit some of the country’s finest museums for free."
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is open for house and exhibit tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The last tickets house tours are sold at 3 p.m. Enjoy docent-led tours through the period rooms to learn the history of the Macculloch family and W. Parsons Todd, the philanthropist who transformed this family home into a museum with a superb collection of fine English and American decorative arts. During tours of the gorgeous historic home visitors will view a variety of decorative art pieces as well as the Museum's collection of original artwork by caricaturist Thomas Nast. Nast, a well-known political cartoonist who popularized the Democratic Donkey and the Republican Elephant, also contributed to America’s contemporary image of Santa Claus. Macculloch Hall Historical Museum has the largest collection of Nast originals in the nation. Tours will visit the second floor gallery exhibits including the current Thomas Nast gallery exhibit “Thomas Nast Brings Down Boss Tweed”. The exhibit features over twenty examples of the political cartoons Nast created attacking Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall. This exhibit closes on August 17th. Also on the second floor is the exhibit “Made in New Jersey: A Celebration of Decorative and Fine Arts” which stars the Museum’s collection of New Jersey stoneware, silver, and artists such as Thomas Nast, A.B. Frost and Edward Kranich. Visitors this summer will also have the opportunity to enjoy the colorful and elegant gardens. The gardens at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum are open Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and Sundays 1pm - 4pm unless posted otherwise. The “Summer Concerts in the Garden Series” takes place at 4pm on Sundays in July. See maccullochhall.org for information about concert tickets (separate admission) and the bands scheduled to play.
