Material Memories: Jewelry from the Collection of Historic New England
January 14, 2015 |
Free to Historic New England members, $5 nonmembers
Jewelry can be far more than gems and gold. Associate Curator Laura Johnson shares highlights from Historic New England’s extensive jewelry collection, including plastic "pop" beads favored by folk art historian Nina Fletcher Little and an enameled butterfly brooch by London Arts and Crafts jewelers Child and Child.
Johnson presents a range of items made from plastic, tin, or glass such as an ambrotype brooch made just after the Civil War by Rhode Island resident Lawrence Rhoades for his wife. Discover how New Englanders use personal adornment to tell the stories of their lives. From the birth of a child to weddings to favorite vacation spots, jewelry helps all of us remember important moments, people, and places.
