Macculloch Hall Exhibit Tours

January 4-29, 2015
Macculloch Hall Exhibit Tours
Did the holidays rush by and you missed a chance to visit Macculloch Hall
Historical Museum (MHHM)? There is still time this January to step back in time
and join us for guided tours and visit the Christmas exhibit, “Another Stocking
To Fill: Antique Christmas Toys and Decorations.” Our holiday shop is also open
for those who want to stock up on some limited edition Thomas Nast ornaments,
gift wrapping supplies or other items before it closes for the season. The
Museum is open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons from 1pm – 4pm,
beginning Sunday, January 4th through Thursday,  January 29th.

In the drawing room visitors will find a special Christmas tree decorated with historically inspired ornaments.

2014 marked the 24th year Morristown’s Assumption School fourth grade students have handcrafted these ornaments and this season’s theme includes small felt
stockings inspired by the Museum’s Christmas exhibit.  “Another Stocking To Fill: Antique Christmas Toys and Decorations” exhibit features toys and ornaments from a century ago.

This was the seventh year this special exhibit have been created through generous object loans from “Sign of the Tymes Antiques” Lafayette NJ and objects from local collector Barbara Silverstein’s collection.

Visitors can also enjoy illustrator Thomas Nast’s original Santa and Christmas images
throughout the Museum’s galleries and period rooms. The Museum has the largest
collection of Nast originals in the nation. While Thomas Nast was primarily a political cartoonist, he was perhaps proudest of his now-iconic image of Santa. Portrayed as a jolly old elf riding high above the rooftops in his reindeer-drawn sleigh and filling each Christmas stocking “hung by the chimney with care,” Santa Claus was inspired by the famous poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas”, or “Twas The Night Before Christmas”, written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1822.

Still need a few New Year’s gifts or want to get a head start on next year’s gift giving?  There’s still time to pick up some unique items. There are a host of Christmas items unique to Macculloch Hall historical Musuem, as well as local history books and hostess gifts inspired by the collection. The 2014 limited edition Thomas Nast ornament is a beautiful burgundy titled “Christmas Post” and features a young boy mailing a letter to the North Pole. Other items include Christmas cards, featuring the Drawing Room Christmas Tree, Thomas Nast cards, Santa mugs and frame able
prints, and limited edition collectible ornaments from past years.  Macculloch Hall Historical Museum gift shop sales help support the Museum’s operations, its public and educational programs, and the preservation and maintenance of its historic buildings and grounds.

The Museum is open for guided tours of the decorated period rooms and visits to exhibits beginning through December 21st 2014 on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons, 1pm – 4pm, the last tour leaves at 3pm.

In 2015 the Drawing Room Christmas tree, Christmas exhibit, and Thomas Nast images on display during touring hours beginning Sunday January 4th through January 29th.  The Museum is open for house and exhibit tours on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons, 1pm – 4pm, the last tour leaves at 3pm. The gift
shop is also open on touring days.
