Crash Course in American Architectural History, Part I: 19th Century

Love old buildings but have no idea what you're looking at? In this 1 hour class, we'll give you the rundown of American architectural styles from the Colonial era through the 19th century, with a focus on local and regional examples. Learn the names of important architectural styles common in the northeast; some basic architectural terminology; and how to approximately date the buildings you see every day. This class can be taken on its own if you’re not a fan of mid-century modern architecture or you can continue the fun with Crash Course in American Architectural History II – 20th Century.Please note: $1 from each ticket sold to this class will be donated to The Landmark Society of Western New York!
About the teachers:
Caitlin Meives is the Preservation Planner on staff at The Landmark Society of Western New York, a regional not-for-profit historic preservation organization based in Rochester and serving a nine county area in western New York. Caitlin holds a M.S. in historic preservation from the University of Vermont. Prior to her employment at The Landmark Society in 2010, she served as the Survey Coordinator at the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office. As the Preservation Planner at The Landmark Society, Caitlin works directly with municipal officials, developers, neighborhood and community advocates, and property owners of all types to assist in the rehabilitation and revitalization of historic buildings, structures, landscapes, and communities. She also oversees the organization’s website and social media and is a founding member of The Landmark Society’s Young Urban Preservationists (YUPs).
A life-long city resident, Cynthia Howk is the Architectural Research Coordinator on staff at the Landmark Society of Western New York, which serves the 9-county greater Rochester area via preservation planning and educational outreach. Her guided tours, illustrated talks, and narrated walks featuring local architecture and history have been popular activities for the many participants who’ve attended them over the years.
