STEAM Makeshops Spring Break Programs: "Experiments in the Garden Lab"

March 30, 2015
STEAM Makeshops Spring Break Programs: "Experiments in the Garden Lab"
Explore, investigate, and create during spring break! This March and April on select Mondays and Tuesdays children ages 8 – 12 years old can attend makeshops at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum to tackle topics in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).  During the makeshops, participants will work in teams and move from investigation to innovation to create problem-solving solutions.

On Monday March 30th, April 6th, or April 13th from 9am to noon, children can take part in “Experiments in the Garden Lab” and explore two critical topics in the Museum’s garden lab. Investigation #1 focuses on the battle between New Jersey’s native plants and invasive plant species. Alien plant species are taking over backyard habitats, changing ecosystems, and altering soil and groundcover. Children will investigate how this is happening and what is being done to stop it. In Investigation #2 children will participate in experiments that test soil chemistry, soil texture and
composition and learn how soil carbon is entering the atmosphere and how this affects global warming.

On Monday March 30th, April 6th, or April 13th from 12:30 to 3:30 pm experience “Seeing What Thomas Nast Saw”.  Children create art using brayer and ink while examining the work of 19th century illustrator and the “father of political cartoons”, Thomas Nast. Using his pen, Nast tackled issues ranging from presidential campaigns to political corruption and battles of the Civil War to battles in Congress. After visiting two galleries of Nast’s work for inspiration, children can turn their attention to today’s topics and find their “voice” in their art as Nast did over 100 years ago. While working with guest artist, Linda Howe, children will experiment with various printing methods.

The makeshop “Canal Construction Challenge” will take place 9 am to noon on Tuesday, March 31st, April 7th, and April 14th. Participants will investigate the power of water, using New Jersey’s Morris Canal as an example. Children will work together in teams to build a large floor map showing the route of the canal and visit the “Canals of New Jersey” exhibit to learn details about the canal’s construction. They will discover how water was used to not only move canal boats along the route but
also to power the turbines that moved boats through the inclined planes. Participants will then work in teams to explore hydropower, a renewable energy source, and create models of their own design that are powered by water.

Pre-registration required.  Recommended ages 8 to 12 years old. $30 per child Museum members and $40 non-members. Please call (973) 538-2404 ext. 16 or email cwinslow@maccullochhall.org to contact Museum Educator Cynthia Winslow with name(s) and age(s) of children, contact phone number and email address.
