April Tours - Macculloch Hall Historical Museum

April 2-30, 2015
April Tours - Macculloch Hall Historical Museum
This April, there is a lot to see and do at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM). On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 1pm – 4pm enjoy docent-led tours through the period rooms to learn the history of the Macculloch family and W. Parsons Todd, the philanthropist who transformed this family home into a museum with a superb collection of English and American fine and decorative arts. During tours, visitors will also view the Museum's collection of original artwork by Thomas Nast, a well-known political cartoonist. Nast is credited for the popularization of the Democratic Donkey and the Republican Elephant, as well as the America’s contemporary image of Santa Claus. MHHM has the largest collection of Nast originals in the nation.

For the newly opened exhibit “Canals of New Jersey”, MHHM has partnered with the Canal Society of New Jersey (CSNJ) to present their traveling exhibit “Canals of New Jersey”. Created in 1985 in part to commemorate the Society’s 25th anniversary, the recently updated display consists of panels that tell the story of New Jersey’s two towpath canals, the Morris and the Delaware and Raritan. The CSNJ’s display is supplemented by MHHM’s collection including the history of Macculloch Hall founder George Macculloch who had the idea for the Morris Canal and objects including model canal boats and images. This exhibit is on display in the second floor gallery during touring hours through October 29th.

This spring MHHM presents a series of programs related to the current exhibits on display at the museum.  Speakers will give presentations on the last Sunday of the month through June, at 4:30pm in the main gallery.  On April 26th join President of the Canal Society of New Jersey Joe Macasek for a program about “The Morris Canal & the Morris Canal Greenway”.  Joe will talk about the history of the canal and explain how it worked.  He will then discuss how the state wide Morris Canal Greenway Project is bringing the canal back to life as a History/Recreation corridor, with preservation projects in the works in five counties across the state.  The program begins at 4:30pm, tickets go on sale at 1pm on the day of the program and visitors can visit the museum prior to the program and take a tour of the period rooms, last tour ticket sold at 3pm and  view the current exhibits, open until 4:30pm.

Mounted to commemorate the final year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial (2011-2015) and currently on display in the Museum’s second floor Thomas Nast gallery is the exhibit, “The Civil War through the Eyes of Thomas Nast”. Before radio, TV, or the internet, there was political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Nast illustrated battles, Union and Confederate troop movements, and their activities throughout the Civil War. Nast covered both the home and battle fronts; his work was the main source of information about the war for many people. Open through December 23rd.

The education department also has lots on offer this month. The Museum invites 3 – 5 year old children and their caregivers to participate in the “Growing in the Garden” programs, which include a story, a walk in the garden, and an art project.  On April 7th search out the signs of spring as flower buds and leaf buds emerge in the garden.  On Tuesday, April 21 MHHM celebrates the day before Earth Day by seeing what creatures are stirring in the garden. There are two session options on both dates; 1:15 – 2 pm or 3:45 – 4:30 pm. On Friday April 24th Homeschool families are invited to the garden at MHHM to celebrate Arbor Day. Through fun hands-on activities, art projects, a special presentation by an instructor in the 4H Master Tree Steward program and a program with an author of an environmental and historical New Jersey set chapter book, families can enjoy the beauty of the trees in the garden whilst learning more about the largest plants on our planet. Pre-registration is required for all education programs by calling (973) 538-2404 ext. 16 or by email cwinslow@maccullochhall.org

MHHM is open for guided tours and visits to exhibits on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons from 1 pm - 4 pm. The last tour ticket is sold at 3pm. Visitors can purchase a ticket to visit any of the changing exhibits at the Museum, or can enjoy the galleries before or after their tours. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and $4 for children ages 6 – 12. Members and children under 5 are free. MHHM preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W. Parsons Todd through its historic site, collections, exhibits, and educational and cultural programs.  Call (973) 538-2404 ext. 10, visit our website maccullochhall.org or find us on Facebook.
