Oakland Walking Tour: Mellon Institute, Central Catholic, and More
July 25, 2015 |
Based on the request of several PHLF members, we are leading a walking tour of the Oakland Civic Center that will include tours of Mellon Institute, Central Catholic, and several other notable landmarks. Conceived as part of the City Beautiful movement and a center for education and culture for more than a century, the Oakland Civic Center is a place of big gifts and big dreams. Mary Schenley, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Phipps, and the Mellon and Heinz families were among the donors who helped make the dreams of City Public Works Director Edward Manning Bigelow, University of Pittsburgh Chancellor John Bowman, and Developer Franklin Nicola come to life.
