Södergren Studio House Tour

Join Docomomo WEWA for a tour of the Evert Södergren Studio House on Lake Washington in the Matthews Beach neighborhood in northeast Seattle. Södergren was a master woodworker, furniture and cabinet maker best known for his Sculptured Chair, first designed in 1953 and added to the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2004.
We have a special opportunity to visit his lakefront house and studio. Originally built in 1928 as a beach cabin, the property was purchased by Södergren in the 1950s. In 1972, he worked with his friend, architect Ralph Anderson, to expand and transform the modest beach cottage into a modern home that deeply embodies Södergren's talent for woodworking and metal work and Anderson's skill in design. The result of their collaboration is a unique example of Pacific Northwest Regionalism. At the tour, you'll see examples of Södergren's masterful designs and woodwork, enhanced by the modernist artwork of Edith Fairhall, Södergren's partner and current homeowner.
After you tour the house, please join us for refreshments in the backyard and marine dock and enjoy the view of Lake Washington and Mount Rainier.

Please come anytime between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. On-street parking is available on Lake Shore Blvd NE and nearby streets. Please do not block driveways. The house is steps away from the Burke-Gilman Trail if you wish to walk or ride your bike.

NOTE: This house is not fully ADA accessible. Viewing this house requires the use of interior and exterior stairs. Children must be with an adult at all times. Children will not be allowed on the spiral staircase. Backpacks and strollers are not permitted inside the home. Exterior and interior photography permitted for personal use only.
