Blue Star Museums

July 16 - September 3, 2015
Blue Star Museums
This summer Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM) in Morristown is participating in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment of the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families, during touring hours this summer through Thursday, September 3rd 2015. The free admission program is available to active duty military and their family members (military ID holder and up to five family members). Active duty military includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members.

Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The complete list of participating museums is available at arts.gov/national/bluestarmuseums

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is open for house and exhibit tours on Wednesday, Thursday & Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The last house tour ticket is sold at 3 p.m. Enjoy docent-led tours through the period rooms to learn the history of the Macculloch family and W. Parsons Todd, the philanthropist who transformed this family home into a museum with a superb collection of fine English and American decorative arts. During tours of the gorgeous historic home visitors will view a variety of decorative art pieces as well as the Museum's collection of original artwork by caricaturist Thomas Nast. Nast, a well-known political cartoonist who popularized the Democratic Donkey and the Republican Elephant, also contributed to America’s contemporary image of Santa Claus. Visitors to MHHM can view the Thomas Nast collection in the downstairs gallery “Thomas Nast Unknown Works and American Icons”. Visitors can also enjoy other current exhibits including “The Civil War through the Eyes of Thomas Nast” which Nast illustrated to show soldiers on the war front and the worried family members they left behind. MHHM has the largest collection of Nast originals in the nation. Visitors can also view the second floor exhibit “Canals of New Jersey” on loan from the Canal Society of New Jersey. The exhibit tells the story of New Jersey’s two canals: the Morris and the Delaware and Raritan and the people who worked on them. The “Canals of New Jersey” exhibit also celebrates George Macculloch’s part in the vision, promotion and impact that the Morris Canal had on New Jersey. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy the colorful and elegant gardens.

The Museum will offer the Blue Star Museums program through Thursday, September 3rd. Please note the Museum is closed the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Sunday September 6th.

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W. Parsons Todd through its historic site, collections, exhibits, and educational and cultural programs. The Museum is open for house and exhibit tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The last tour leaves at 3pm. Adults $8; Seniors & Students $6; Children 6 – 12 $4. Members and children under 5 are free. The gardens at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum are open Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and Sundays 1pm - 4pm unless posted otherwise.
