Julmarknad (Christmas Market) @ Bishop Hill State Historic Site
December 5-6, 2015 |
The village of Bishop Hill, including the state historic site, will host its annual “Julmarknad” Christmas market. The market features foods, gifts and traditions that reflect the community’s origin as a religious colony founded by Swedish immigrants.
Those traditions include the Christmas goat, or “julbok,” and bearded elves known as “tomten.” The colorful characters can be seen making visits around town or found, in toy form, in many shops.
Julmarknad also offers a chance to meet Santa Claus, cookies and chocolate, Swedish foods like potato sausage and rusks, and a selection of Swedish-style crafts that make wonderful gifts. Also on the agenda: a model railroad, woodworking demonstrations, a Christmas tree with decorations inspired by the colony’s dairy maids, and fresh-baked cookies.
The festive events take place Friday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 29, and then again Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
For details, call (309) 927-3345 or (309) 927-3899, or visit www.bishophill.com. The Bishop Hill State Historic Site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
Highlights of Julmarknad include:
• A Christmas Cookie Walk on Nov. 27 and 28 at the Colony School. Homemade cookies and baked goods can be purchased by the pound from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sample freshly baked cookies 1-3 p.m. on Nov. 27 and 28 in the 1860’s Bjorklund Hotel kitchen.
