Preservation and Innovation: Striking the Balance

July 13, 2016

Architectural fashions reflect the changing times. The New Old South Church and the original Museum of Fine Arts at Copley Square were initially lauded by critics, only to be declared out of date a few decades later.

Successive owners routinely add to, subtract from, and reinvent their buildings to keep them relevant. Are local preservation commissions doing our built heritage a disservice by insisting that buildings be slavishly referential or frozen in time?

In this illustrated lecture, Lynne Spencer, principal and historic preservation specialist at Spencer & Vogt Group and former director of properties at Historic New England, asks whether historic design review has outlived its usefulness, and explores how to encourage architectural creativity while respecting the past. Light refreshments on the terrace precede the lecture.

Cosponsored by the Boston Preservation Alliance.

At the Otis House from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for Historic New England and Boston Preservation Alliance members. $10 general public. Registration is required. Boston Preservation Alliance members must call to register. Please call 617-994-5920 or visit HistoricNewEngland.org
