Modern Sacred Spaces 2016

May 11, 2016

Modern Sacred Spaces is Docomomo WEWA's event series showcasing religious structures built by different faith communities in the mid-20th century. The buildings represent innovative efforts by postwar architects and engineers to create spiritual places of light and form using new materials and construction techniques.

PLYMOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

Our second event of the series will occur on Wednesday, May 11th at Plymouth Congregational Church in downtown Seattle. Designed by NBBJ and built in 1967-68, the church's modest white exterior anchors an important corner of Modern architecture in downtown. Many interior spaces provide amazing views to its Modern neighbors: the IBM building and Rainier Tower. However, the main sanctuary and smaller chapel are voluminous insular gems separated from the hectic urban activity surrounding it.

Plymouth Congregational Church will be open from 5:00 - 6:45 pm, May 11. At 5:30 pm, Jennifer Hing of LMN Architects and Steve Stroming of RAFN Construction will describe the recent upgrades. The address is 1217 6th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101. Enter through the main entrance on 6th Avenue near University Street. Free parking is available in the underground garage (after 4 pm until 6:45 pm. Both the garage and church building close at 7 pm).

Members of the congregation will be present to speak about the experience of celebrating inside these spaces.

REGISTER

Tickets are available for purchase online through Brown Paper Tickets. The event is $10 + $1.34 service fee (if purchased online) or $15 at-the-door. Students are welcome for a discount fee of only $5 (online w/$1.17 service fee) or at-the-door. All tour fees go toward future programs.

Stay tuned for more Modern Sacred Spaces tours throughout the year!
