June 12, 2016 |
Sunday, June 12, 2016 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm The National Lighthouse Museum, Staten Island, NY presents – Michael Vigorito & Robert Marraccino – Spirit of Place: The Quarantine Grounds and Marine Hospital of Staten Island before Ellis Island, the New York Marine Hospital housed ship passengers with any sign of sickness before allowed to reach their destinations in the USA. Also known as the Quarantine, it stood on Staten Island and included the present site of the National Lighthouse Museum.
Diseases such as cholera, smallpox, and yellow fever swept through passenger ships and then onto Staten Island. The medical and scientific community addressed the problem aggressively but had a very poor understanding of these maladies. Sicken with disease, social stigma, and low property values, fed-up Staten Islanders burned down the Quarantine in 1858. Join Dr. Robert Marraccino and Dr. Michael Vigorito as they trace the illuminating history from the founding of the Quarantine in 1799 to its destruction in 1858.
