Preserving the Maritime Heritage of Ocracoke Island - 2016 Restoration and Endowment Campaign;
May 15 - November 30, 2016 |
The Community Square is situated along the shores of Silver Lake in the heart of Ocracoke Island, an unbridged island on NC's Outer Banks. With a view across the harbor of the Ocracoke Lighthouse (ca. 1823), these 5 National Historic Register buildings have served as a hub of commerce and social gatherings since the early 1900's. Listed for sale in 2009, the Ocracoke Foundation purchased this island asset in 2013 for $1.6M to restore and preserve it, and put it to work for the community.
The Community Square Revitalization Project involves historic preservation, environmental stewardship, waterfront access and public use, and community sustainability of our maritime heritage. The Conservation Fund and a Private Donor each put up $800,000 for the purchase. The 2016 Restoration and Endowment Campaign seeks to repay The Conservation Fund, and the Private Donor will forgive debt obligation 1:1 to match donations to repay The Conservation Fund.
