Structural Intervention: From the State Historical Building Code to Resilient Design
July 21, 2016 |
In California, historical buildings are especially vulnerable in the face of disaster and climate change. At the same time, architects and engineers have a powerful tool available that sets forth a tried and true alternative for addressing structural issues in historic buildings: The California Historical Building Code (CHBC). This full day workshop will start by laying out the structural provisions of the CHBC and will close with case examples and strategies for resiliency to address a wide range of issues and threats, from climate change to earthquakes.
You will…
-
Get the architect and structural engineer’s perspective of the CHBC
- Examine seismic upgrades of unique building elements
- Review approaches to seismic retrofits by public entities
- Understand the U.S. Resiliency Council’s development of a rating system for pre- and post-earthquake evaluation of buildings.
