Horse-racing was a critical part of building the fortunes and homes of many white male landowners in Tennessee, Jackson included. However, much of the care, training, and racing of the horses was done by enslaved and free men of color. Stop by and learn the stories of The Hermitage’s horse trainers and jockeys who managed Jackson’s racing stables and helped build the plantation you see today. You’ll also get to meet some of the real carriage horses of today’s Hermitage, and learn their stories too!
