2016 Missouri Preservation Conference
October 19-21, 2016 |
The 2015 Conference was a blast. The conference started early on Wednesday, October 21st. After a welcome by Cape Girardeau’s Mayor Harry Rediger and the University’s President Dr. Carlos Vargas, David Brown of the National Trust for Historic Preservation delivered a Keynote Address centered on the conference theme, “The Past and Future of Preservation.” Mr. Brown talked of embracing both continuity and change in our approach to preservation of the built environment and saving the places that matter to both Missourians and the Nation.
Thursday’s State of Preservation Luncheon featured Dr. Toni Prawl of the State Historic Preservation Office and Bill Hart of Missouri Preservation in their annual recap of preservation activities both in the governmental and private sectors. That night, we celebrated and recognized the host city’s people and projects that have contributed to the preservation of Missouri’s rich and diverse collection of historic resources. These one-time only awards highlight the significant contributions that have helped create a preservation legacy in the host city.
The Conference came to a close on Friday, October 23rd. Friday’s Plenary Luncheon featured former US Congressman Russ Carnahan, newly appointed director of Preservation Action, the national lobbying arm for historic preservation. Mr. Carnahan talked about his vision and beginning efforts to organize statewide non-profits to advocate for national preservation issues.
