November 11-13, 2016

Sarasota Architectural Foundation in Partnership with Sarasota Museum of Art Presents

SarasotaMOD Weekend, November 11 - 13, 2016

Three Day Festival Showcases Mid-Century Sarasota Architecture
Special Tribute to Victor Lundy

(Sarasota, FL) Sarasota Architectural Foundation, in partnership with the Sarasota Museum of Art, a division of Ringling College of Art + Design, presents its third annual mid-century modern architecture festival November 11-13, 2016. SarasotaMOD Weekend 2016 will pay a special tribute to acclaimed architect Victor Lundy, now 93. The three-day weekend will feature Lundy-themed presentations by architects and historians, a Lundy film screening, trolley and walking tours, a gallery exhibition of his drawings, and an opening night party in one of his most celebrated buildings. Adding to the festivities will be private access to iconic Sarasota modernist homes designed by Lundy’s contemporaries, including Paul Rudolph and Edward “Tim” Seibert.

Lundy played a key role in the Sarasota School of Architecture movement, helping establish Sarasota as an important center of midcentury modern architecture. His lyrical and nonconformist style was often characterized by soaring, sculptural silhouettes. Lundy is best known for his St. Paul Lutheran and Bee Ridge Presbyterian Churches, Alta Vista Elementary School, Southgate Community Center and Blue Pagoda Building, all in Sarasota, and also worldwide for his Herron House, Venice, FL; U.S. Tax Court Building, Washington, DC; First Unitarian Church, Westport, CT and United States Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Festival Highlights

Party in iconic Lundy building. Kickoff cocktail soiree in the Blue Pagoda (Sarasota Chamber of Commerce Building, 1956). Sarasota’s mayor Willie Shaw will read a proclamation designating November 7 – 13  Victor Lundy Week.

Legacy presentations and film screening at Ringling College of Art + Design. Presentation by architect Donna Kacmar, FAIA, author of a forthcoming Lundy biography; screening of the documentary Sculptor of Space: The Architecture of Victor Lundy and remarks by the film’s producer Joan Brierton; panel discussion moderated by architect/author Christopher Domin with participants Kacmar, Brierton, architect Frank Folsom Smith, FAIA and Library of Congress architectural archives founder C. Ford Peatross.

Trolley tours of Lundy and Sarasota landmarks. Led by Ringling College professor of architecture and design history Christopher Wilson, PhD, and Harold Bubil, Herald-Tribune real estate editor.

Lundy art exhibition. On view at Art Center Sarasota. Lundy is also a gifted artist. The exhibition will display original watercolor paintings of the Blue Pagoda Building as well as early notebooks and sketches. "Drawing is how I think", he said.

Private access to midcentury homes designed by such Sarasota School of Architecture luminaries as Paul Rudolph, Edward “Tim” Siebert and William Rupp.

Event Producers

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) is a 501(c)(3) organization that celebrates the Sarasota School of Architecture movement, and advocates to preserve the mid-century modern structures that exemplify its forward-looking principles.

The Sarasota Museum of Art, a division of Ringling College of Art + Design, is a conversion of the historic 1926 Sarasota High School space into an up-to-the-minute visual arts destination: the region’s first museum dedicated to contemporary art.
