Earth, Wind, Water, Fire: Strategies for Resiliency of Historic Resources

November 7, 2016
Earth, Wind, Water, Fire: Strategies for Resiliency of Historic Resources
Our historic resources are threatened by natural and manmade hazards including earthquakes, high winds, sea-level rise, fire, and floods.  How can policy makers and designers best plan to protect these resources, and extend their useful life in the face of these risks? This workshop will present an overview of the core concepts of Resiliency, the ability to withstand, adapt, and recover from shocks and stresses. We will discuss the development of public policy and practical design recommendations to mitigate these risks. The morning session will center around a panel of experts focusing on the benefits of broad public policy to address Resiliency. We will explore some of the successes and challenges in past Resiliency programs and lay out recommendations for future development. The second half of the day will delve deeper into the practical challenges of historic resource resiliency using the Port of San Francisco as a case study. Explore Embarcadero Historic District cultural resources on a tour that will confront sea level rise and seismic challenges on the ground, and follow-up with an engaging panel discussion that will address protection of historic resources against short-term shocks and long-term stresses.
