More Than Just a Pretty Facade

March 3, 2017

Calling all engineers, architects, homeowners, and other lovers of New York brownstones! Considering a brownstone project? Wish you knew more before wading into a costly repair? Our experts will share their decades of knowledge and hands-on experience in this unique program focusing on all things BROWNSTONE.

Nineteenth-century rowhouses give the Upper West Side so much of its essential character and human scale.  And every day, they are changing - restoration, deterioration, expansion, preservation. On Friday, March 3rd, master craftsman and brownstone conservator Jack Pontes and NYC Landmarks Preservation Commissioner and architectural conservator Michael Devonshire will share their deep knowledge of the history, materials, landmarks approvals, must-dos, and best practices related to the repair and replacement of brownstone stoops, cornices, balustrades, and more.

Join these two committed preservationists for a slide-based discussion of actual facade restoration projects exploring:
  • The materials most commonly used in the original construction of NYC brownstone buildings
  • Where NYC's sedimentary stones come from and why were they were used for our brownstone buildings
  • Choices and their impacts: Understanding levels of intervention in restoration work
  • Common problems building owners encounter in the correction and preservation of stoops, balustrades, and facades
  • You and your LPC permit applications: who needs what when and how
  • Much, much more!
Don't miss this in-depth discussion - the first in a series focusing on keeping NYC's distinctive brownstone buildings safe, sound, and enduring features of our city's streetscape.

Architects and others may self-report this 3 hour program for potential continuing education credits.
